As we close out 2024, I'm filled with gratitude for the Dashboard.Earth community. This year, we celebrated record-breaking app downloads, soft launched in San Diego, and built transformative partnerships with a diverse range of organizations, from community non-profits to national corporations.
Together, we've proven the power of collective action to make local climate solutions more accessible, impactful, and rewarding.
Our momentum sets the stage for an exciting 2025. We're ready to expand our reach, launch our nonprofit branch, and continue empowering communities to tackle climate challenges head-on. Both Los Angeles and San Diego are working towards securing their water supply by sourcing a significant portion of their water locally. LA aims to source 80% of its water locally by 2045, while San Diego strives for a 50% local water source.

Waste Reduction
Both cities are committed to reducing landfill waste by promoting composting and reusables. LA aims to divert 95% of landfill waste by 2028, while San Diego aims to divert 90%.

Renewable Energy
LA and San Diego share a goal of transitioning to 100% renewable energy to clean their grids. LA plans to achieve this by 2045, while San Diego is working towards the same goal without a specified timeframe.

Emissions Reduction
Both cities are focused on reducing emissions to combat climate change. LA plans to reduce emissions by 40% below 2015 levels by 2030. San Diego has a specific focus on reducing vehicle miles traveled (VMT) by 15%.

LA is committed to protecting its biodiversity through a goal of zero net loss of biodiversity by 2050. This includes measures to preserve the health of its diverse plant and wildlife.

Brush Wisely - Turning off the tap while brushing
On average, a standard bathroom faucet uses about 2 to 2.5 gallons of water per minute. By turning off the tap while brushing your teeth (typically a 2-minute process), a person can save around 4 to 5 gallons of water each time they brush their teeth. If someone brushes twice a day, that's approximately 8 to 10 gallons saved daily. As this is an introductory habit most users already do, we assume that users maintain this habit nearly every day the a year.

If a user installs bathroom faucet aerators, 1 kitchen aerator, and 1 low flow shower head, they’ll save 8000 gallons of water on average over the course of a year.

Five Minute Fresh - Taking shorter showers
An average shower head in California has a flow rate of 1.8 gallons per minute (gpm). Reducing shower time from 10 minutes to 5 minutes results in 9 gallons of water saved. To annualize, we assume each user maintains their short shower habit twice a week for a year.

Shifting from a meat-based to a plant-based diet can save around 315 gallons of water per person daily, as plant-based foods avoid the high water demands of feed crops, animal care, and meat processing. To annualize, we assume that users eat plant-based one day per week for a year.

The average American household discards roughly 19 pounds of food waste each week. This equates to about 2.7 pounds) of food waste per household per day. To annualize, we assume users who were already composting continue to do so every day for a year. For new composters, we only include impact data for those who have logged 6+ times on the platform.

Switching to OhmConnect can save an average California household about 581 kWh annually, reflecting a 10% reduction in energy consumption based on typical yearly usage of 5812 kWh.

Saving 9 gallons of water by shortening showers from 10 to 5 minutes can save approximately 1.53 kWh of energy, due to the energy used to distribute and heat water. To annualize, we assume each user maintains their short shower habit twice a week for a year

Car-free Cruising - Taking alternative transportation
We assume that private automobile travel emits approximately 404 grams of CO₂-equivalent (CO₂e) per mile, whereas public transportation travel emits approximately 100 grams CO₂e per mile. Under these assumptions, substituting one mile of private vehicle travel with public transportation results in an emissions reduction of approximately 304 grams of CO₂e per mile. To annualize, we assume that each user engages in this transportation switch once per week for a year.

Smart Scraps - Composting food scraps
Composting food waste instead of sending it to landfill reduces emissions by approximately 0.44 kg CO₂e per kilogram of food waste. For each action in this analysis, we assume that the average participant generates 1.23 kg of food waste per day, derived from the U.S. average of 19 pounds of food waste per household per week. To annualize, we assume users who were already composting continue to do so every day for a year. For new composters, we only include impact data for those who have logged 6+ times on the platform.

Studies estimate that an average meat-based diet is associated with approximately 5.6 kilograms (kg) of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions per person per day, while a plant-based diet is associated with roughly 3.8 kg CO2e per person per day. Key Contributors
We successfully drove user growth at a more efficient cost by improving ad targeting and focusing on higher-intent users on Meta, maximizing the ROI of paid campaigns. Our refined community engagement and organic social strategies expanded our reach and fostered stronger connections with users. Additionally, enhancements to the in-app onboarding experience boosted conversion rates, transforming new users into active participants in the Dashboard.Earth community.

Plant-Based Dining Month
During November, we teamed up with the international Plant Based Treaty to spotlight plant-based eating in Los Angeles. The campaign featured 10 local restaurants offering discounts and free dishes to Dashboard.Earth users. This initiative aimed to encourage climate-friendly food choices, support local businesses, and raise awareness about the environmental impact of our diets.

SoCal Transit Week
In partnership with MoveLA, Dashboard.Earth participated in the first ever SoCal Transit Week, a campaign focused on shifting the narrative around public transit in Los Angeles County. We acted as the official technology partner, providing impact data on event participation, promoting events, and adding incentives to encourage the use of public transportation.
Key initiatives included a free fare day across eight SoCal public transit providers, tabling events, and a scavenger hunt. Participation earned users tickets to win grand prizes.

Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator
Following a multi-month selection and diligence process, Dashboard.Earth was admitted into the Los Angeles ClimateTech Incubator (LACI) in the fall of 2024.
LACI works with cities to identify, vet and pilot sustainable solutions that meet local needs. They boast a portfolio of over 504 companies and has helped its portfolio companies raise over $1 billion in capital.

Corporate Engagement Case Study: LAZ
Early in 2024, we launched a corporate engagement pilot program with LAZ Parking, the largest and fastest-growing privately held parking company in the United States.
Now entering its third phase, the pilot exemplifies how we connect diverse climate stakeholders while proving the potential of our revenue model. We’ve driven measurable impact, increased participation rates, and transitioned to a paid partnership, setting the stage for further regional expansion in 2025.
